SENIOR SHOWCASE - BOOK COVER RE-DESIGN & ENVIRONMENTAL SPACE

What story does your shadow tell?

These five covers explore the inner story and message each novel portrays of their female character leads. The goal of this project was to bring out each character’s unique experience without fully identifying the character. The use of shadows is used to represent the presence of the characters themselves with different key elements alluding to each novel’s theme. The shadows also allow the reader to create an image of the character for themselves based on the author’s words. Novel covers fall prey to the media’s characterization of women, presenting women as sexual objects to sell books. The purpose of this project was to eliminate these stereotypes and misconceptions and focus on the story of the character, presenting a cover that is a direct account of the character’s experiences.

For the environmental space, I wanted to create an atmosphere where the viewer can grab a book and cozy up to read. The banner takes key visual elements from each novel cover to create a new design connecting each story.
